Retro Tech: Flying Cars

No matter what year, the idea of flying vehicles helps cement our sense of when the future begins. I’m taking a look at everything flying - from cars to skateboards - and seeing where the tech currently stands. I also look at some classic old toys with comedian Michael Ian Black.

I think that to create flying cars and skateboards you need a new technology that we still do not know, such as anti-gravity materials. As for propulsion, gas or fuel take up a lot of space and are expensive. NASA will surely discover these technologies one day and apply them to everyday life like many other inventions.

Take a good look at everyone driving, or failing to do so. Now put them hundreds, maybe thousands of feet in the air. These things would have to be 100% automated, and even then the chance of catastrophic failure, the horrible inefficiency, the probable threat to wildlife (I’ve hit birds with my ground-loving truck), would make flying cars such a bad thing. While I’m all for flying emergency response vehicles, I NEVER want to see flying cars.

That hoverboard drone at the end was pretty fun looking! I was a little disappointed that the Mollar M400 Skycar wasn't in this episode. They were pretty close for a while but seemed that insurance and regulatory concerns were an issue. Or at least I think that's what the company was saying anyway.

Interesting, but this episode should have been labeled "Retro Tech: hover boards". There was no coverage of the companies that are poised to bring drone-like flying cars to market, what that experience will be like, is it a trend that will continue to evolve, and in what ways.

OMG, can we do away with propellers? I mean the whole point of a flying car is one without wings or propellers. Like the stuff we see in Star Trek or Back to the Future. I really believe that electrostatic levitation and propulsion will be the kind of levitation we're all looking for. Instead of building propeller lifting vehicles, focus all efforts on making a superconductor higher than room temperature and a better battery or energy device, like Mr. Fusion. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) will, if things go according to plan, move one step closer to becoming the world’s first functioning nuclear fusion reactor this summer when scientists conduct its inaugural test runs. Then when the technology is better understood, we'll have smaller ones that can run our flying cars. Superconductors, fusion, force Fields, gravity generators, and energy weapons. Then we can start mining asteroids and colonizing planets. All's we'll have to worry about is drunk drivers and terrorists unless flying is automated. I believe all driving and flying needs to be automated to prevent accidents. Drunks, terrorists, old people, distracted driving, and falling asleep at the wheel could all be avoided with automated driving.

Marques i am avid subscriber to your channel you are brilliant.. from one broda to another, 1.why dont we have flying cars and all other technology that we were promised.. its a simple answer, That technology was already made and the people who made it look like you.. Know is a racial issue yes, is it an economics issue yes, is it an issue where people will get to see what is really going on over and under their noses yes.. 2.Its all of the above its not a conspiracy theory its not even my opinion its a fact.. The pyramids in Giza and other pyramids built through out the world have that the quote unquote genius of MIT and other institution have they explained it NO. 3.If you want flying cars you have to work with nature, and the earth magnetic grids... But Marques, and their is always a butt, that will mean that we have free flowing energy coming from the earth.. 4.Marques you and everyone else has energy emitting from that why body language can be interpreted without someone asking you what is wrong.. 5. Its all about energy and who controls it its simple as that.. simplicity is the key of everliving.. 6. You Marques Brownlee are the technology... and yes I went their aren't you looking for the future...

This could have been way more comprehensive. It was really great but I've seen a bunch of little personal flying drone things that you can sit inside of and they didn't bring that up at all. That's way closer to a flying car than the very last thing which I think was called a hoverboard. That was basically just a drone that you stand on but it's a far cry from a flying car. I've seen a bunch of those flying cars at like CES and if it wasn't for the safety concerns I think we would all have them and even may have them soon.

Flying cars are the easiest thing to make in principle utilizing simple magnetism with two magnetic fields in a certain configuration I call a magneto-dielectric repulsine drive. I will not go into the engineering details but will say this technology is so pathetically easy, and it's not a shame that it hasn't been invented, because it has, but that no one else has come up with it since then.
David Stewart

Well I want to fly and I have faith we will soon overcome the problems standing in the way. I have seen several models that expect to actually go into production this year. I think the biggest issue is there are some who remain stuck on the 'fly" part of the equation, that is they want what is essentially a plane with some limited ability to drive versus a car that also fly's. I want the Bladerunner experience or even 6th Element version and I bet most other folks do as well.

Flying cars are not efficient and dangerous. There is plane and there is cars. They have different purpose. Hybrid between them is very unlikely. I think there won't be one in the near future. Whats wrong with cars are there is a friction between touched areas which are wheels and roads. This make cars less efficient and less stable. The solution to this is hovering. So, whats more likely in near future is hovering cars.
